Yes, you read that right. I was diagnosed with skin cancer in September. Everyone is surprised to hear that when I tell them because well, I am an esthetician who knows how to take care of skin.
Here’s the thing most the damage you see on your skin in your 30s, 40s and 50s and beyond happened a long time ago. Research says a lot of sun damage happens before we are 20!
I had some blistering sunburns in my teen years. Not smart!
I takes years for the damaged cells to migrate to the top of your epidermis.
The good news about that, is you still have a chance at preventing them from tuning into pre-cancer or cancer cells.
First and foremost, get skin checks done by your dermatologist every year.
If I had not gone in to have the spot on the side of my nose looked at when I did, it would have been much worse. I caught it early enough to only need some minor surgery. and I am on the mend.
As your esthetician there are things we can do together to help prevent precancerous cells or prevent AKs (actinic keratosis.)
These are some specific facials you can ask for.
1. Microdermabrasion.
2. Nano needling
3. Vitamin C Facials
There is also at home care you can do to reverse and prevent sun damage.
1. Use a vitamin C serum daily.
2. Use a retinol serum if appropriate for the skin (not everyone can use it).
3. SUNSCREEN everyday is the most important one for preventing more sun damage!
Having a relationship with an esthetician that you trust and see regularly can often be an asset not only to how your skin looks, but to your overall health.
I have many long-time regular clients. When I have seen suspicious looking spots appear, I send them to the dermatologist.
So, build a long-lasting relationship with your esthetician because they can be an ally to your health.
Hope to see you soon for any skin care help you need whether it’s a facial or help with picking the right serums and sunscreens.
